Gmail trick - Figure out who is giving out your email address

Friday, November 17, 2006 4:09:46 PM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

If you use Gmail, this neat trick will let you know if anyone gives out your email address. When you sign up on a web site instead of entering username@gmail.com, put in username+websitecom@gmail.com. Gmail will ignore the + and everything following it, so you'll still get the email. To find out who is responsible for an email, you can click the Show Details link. You can also search for username+websitecom to see all of the messages sent to that address.

Interesting new websites

Friday, November 10, 2006 12:47:50 AM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

Jellyfish is calling itself a "buying engine". They help you find what you are looking for from a trusted merchant, and then promise to give you at least half of the money they earn for referring you to the store. Stores spend advertising dollars to lower your bottom line by offering cash back, the lower the price, the higher they are on the results list.

The really interesting thing about Jellyfish is the smack shopping! deal of the day. Each day they put an undisclosed quantity of an item up for auction starting at the regular price. Then every few seconds the price begins to fall until all the items are gone. Buyers will need to make the tough choice between waiting for the price to fall and buying before the item is sold out. Past auctions have resulted in 10 people getting 2GB iPod Nanos for free, and 50 portable DVD players sold for as low as $60! They even have a blog for the deals.

TenHunt.com is an online scavenger hunt where players race to answer questions to win a prize. Each hunt will require players to answer 10 questions by visiting sponsor sites to get the answers. The next hunt starts today at 7:19 PM Pacific. The winner will receive a 30 GB Video iPod.

Xuqa (pronounced zoo kah) is an interesting social networking/popularity contest/game. Players earn "peanuts", the in game currency, by playing poker, competing in modeling contests, filling out research surveys, and referring other users. They can use the peanuts to purchase privileges and tools to help them along the way to reaching the highest status level of 10. Players who reach level 10 are awarded with a $1,000 cash prize.

FreshBooks - Online invoicing service

Thursday, October 05, 2006 10:53:44 AM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

I came across FreshBooks over on TechCrunch. FreshBooks is an online invoicing solution that makes it easy to send, track and collect payments quickly. They are targeting web designers, consultants and service providers who want an easy way to do invoicing and track billing. It will let you send invoices via email or post, and supports collecting payments online via PayPal or Authorize.Net. I setup a free account and it looks like it is pretty easy to use. I think I am going to try them out and see how well it works. Their free account lets you work with up to 3 clients, if you need more then that, they have several different subscription levels based upon how many people in your company and how many clients.

New Search Engines

Thursday, September 28, 2006 6:06:04 AM (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-08:00)

There were two new search engines presented at DEMOfall that look interesting.

Retrevo is a consumer electronics search engine. Just enter the product you are looking for and it will return categorized links to product documentation, reviews etc. This fills a much needed gap in my opinion since Google seems to be overrun by shopping sites that provide no useful information.

3DSeek: By Doodling is a start towards something I've been wanting to see in a search engine, they let you search, by drawing a picture. 3DSeek is limited to finding manufactured parts and custom service suppliers and only searched diagrams and 3D models in it's database. I would like to see something similar combined with Google Image Search. They could process all the images using some tracing software like Imagaro Z and store the results enabling users to search by drawing, or uploading an image. There have been several time where this would have been extremely useful. A picture is worth a thousand words...
